Septic Maintenance Information
A typical residential septic system consists of two parts: a water-tight septic tank that household waste first flows into, which is connected to a soil absorption area that disperses the grey water into the ground. A septic system is a "filter" system, having three layers. As the household waste flows into the septic tank, heavy solids float to the bottom of the tank; lighter solids sit on top of the grey water layer, which is in between the light and heavy solids. As decomposition takes place, the excess grey water flows over to the absorption area to be dispersed into the ground. The solids accumulate as "sludge" and need to be pumped out on a maintenance schedule. A septic tank gets "thicker," not "fuller." Suppose excess sludge plugs into the absorption area, a costly repair is needed to bring the septic system back up to working order.
To prolong the life of your septic system and minimize maintenance costs, we recommend the following:
Pump your septic tank at proper intervals. We recommend a 3-5 year maintenance schedule. The pumping schedule is based on three variables, which are
1.) The size of your septic tank
2.) The number of people residing in your household
3.) If the home is a year-round residence or seasonal.
Some folks use the presidential election year (4-year intervals) as a pumping reminder. Whatever may be your reminder, try to maintain a maintenance pumping schedule, and your septic system should last for years to come.
Helpful Tips:
Do: Limit excess water use. Water-saving faucets, showers, toilets, washers, and dishwashers are a plus for the system.
Do not flush the following: disposable diapers, baby wipes, sanitary napkins, tampons, condoms, paper towels, dye-heavy toilet paper, kitty litter, cigarette butts, and medicines.
*In short, avoid putting anything in your septic system that does not decompose quickly*
Avoid Adding heavy cleaners, caustic chemicals, bleach, paint and paint products, excess grease and oil, and excess food.
* Anything that can kill the live bacteria already in your system interferes with the natural decomposition process of a working septic system.
